This project features work from my BFA senior exhibition. "ApartMates" is about a social media app where residents of apartment complexes can connect and build community. My thesis had to include a graphic design project of my choosing and two semesters worth of work. Project Statement: Community is an important -and often overlooked- part of our well-being. As technology continues to become more relevant than ever, it is increasing necessary to optimize it in ways which add to our betterment. At its worst, technology contributes to social withdrawal which weakens communities, but it doesn’t have to be this way. ApartMates is a social media app for residents of apartment complexes that is offering a modern solution for problems which arise from our ever-changing world. Social media is best utilized when it enhances relationships and gives way to create new, meaningful connections. Existing social media spaces are often oriented around performance and status signaling whereas ApartMates’ focus is community building. Successfully Introducing something for people to incorporate in their daily lives isn’t uncomplicated, which is why effective and well-executed advertising is so pivotal for this project. To achieve this project’s full potential, a large percentage of residents need to be active on the platform because a community can’t exist without its members. Through strategic advertising, design, and careful planning, the role of social media in our lives can be re-imagined.
